- 2nd May, 2025
- Event News & Festival Happenings
An Exclusive Interview with Chairman Ric Suzio
MERIDEN, CT – Sunshine, salsa, schnitzel, and soundtracks from tribute bands set the stage as the Meriden Daffodil Festival returned in full bloom for its 45th anniversary celebration! Held in the scenic Hubbard Park, this beloved Connecticut tradition brought families and festivalgoers from across New England together for a weekend packed with unforgettable moments.
In an on-site interview, Festival Chairman Ric Suzio gave us a high-energy rundown of everything this milestone weekend had to offer—and it did not disappoint.
Three Stages, 30+ Bands, and Pure Energy
"This weekend, we’ve got three stages starting Saturday with over 30 bands performing," Suzio beamed. "From an internationally known Dave Matthews Tribute Band to a local Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac tribute, plus salsa and other cultural music—it’s a full spectrum of sound."
Live entertainment continued across the weekend, creating a vibrant atmosphere that kept the park buzzing.
Food, Culture, and Community All Under One Tent
Hungry? The nonprofit food tent had everything. "We’ve got hot dogs, hamburgers, fair food, fried dough, bratwurst, schnitzel, walking tacos, empanadas, barbecue—you name it," Suzio said.
And it’s all for a good cause. Local organizations like the Rotary Club, Lions Club, Kiwanis, Noah’s Ark of Hope, and Meriden Raiders Youth Football ran booths staffed with volunteers. Each group handpicked their menu, served the crowd, and raised money for their programs.
Activities for Everyone
This year’s festival was truly something for all ages. "Behind us, you’ve got kid rides, and in front of us, more rides!" Suzio laughed. Younger attendees flocked to the Action Zone, while families explored the whimsical Theater of the Trees.
A bustling craft fair and the Mid-State Chamber of Commerce Business Expo added even more variety to the weekend.
Fireworks Return for the 45th Anniversary
To celebrate its 45th year, the Daffodil Festival brought back a crowd favorite—Saturday night fireworks! "We’ll have live entertainment right up until the fireworks begin after dark," Suzio confirmed. The spectacle lit up the skies and spirits, adding a perfect finale to day one.
Free Parking, Free Admission, and Festival Magic
One of the best parts? It’s incredibly accessible. "Admission is free. Parking is free. We just ask people not to park in the park itself,” Suzio noted.
Free shuttle buses transported guests from:
- Platt High School – 220 Coe Ave, Meriden, CT
- Lincoln Middle School – 164 Centennial Ave, Meriden, CT
- Meriden Mall – 470 Lewis Ave, Meriden, CT
The only costs were for rides and any delicious food you couldn’t resist—making the event perfect for those on a budget.
From Meriden to Maine: A Festival for the Region
Thanks to word-of-mouth and decades of success, the Meriden Daffodil Festival has grown far beyond city limits. "We’ve had people come from as far as Maine, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and New York," Suzio shared. "It’s become one of the most well-known festivals in New England."
A Blooming Success
With blue skies, bursting flavors, and booming fireworks, the 45th Meriden Daffodil Festival was a joyful reminder of why this event has stood the test of time. As Suzio put it best:
“If you can’t find something here, you’re not looking!”

Full Circle: How Hip-Hop Legends, Creative Journeys, and Fate United Two Parallel Lives
Life has an extraordinary way of bringing stories full circle. My journey began immersed in the vibrant energy of local Bridgeport Connecticut where I was a student at Bullard Havens Technical School where i studied culinary arts. I had a passion for food, dance, arts, festivals, carnivals, parades and fairs—where creativity bloomed early through graffiti art, airbrushing, and the dynamic pulse of community gatherings. Growing up amidst many personal family struggles, art became my sanctuary, a refuge from chaos and a gateway to connection.
Not far away, another young visionary—known in the early days as Sweety G—was creating history in hip-hop's earliest chapters. Emerging from a similarly challenging upbringing, his pioneering spirit helped shape the very foundation of hip-hop culture, introducing rhythmic rhymes over beats that would resonate across generations.
Years later, inspired by the cultural energy that pioneers like Sweety G ignited, I found myself deeply involved in the underground music scene, doing artist repertoire, digital marketing department for bands DJ's, MC's, dance artists and graffiti artists by organizing events and promotions for clubs stretching from Providence, Boston, New Haven to Brooklyn as Spread The Word Productions. Among these events was a celebration of hip-hop culture itself—the Return of the Boom Bap festival. It was here that I had the honor of booking the legendary Grandmaster Caz, whose words and rhymes had influenced the very fabric of hip-hop.
Grandmaster Caz, during his time with us, emphasized the historical significance of artists who first blended poetic rhymes with rhythmic beats. Who would have known, now in a striking moment of recognition, Caz had specifically acknowledged Sweety G as a foundational voice—one of the very first emcees to rhyme rhythmically over beats, a true innovator who opened the doors for countless artists to follow.
This acknowledgment sparked a powerful realization of just how closely our paths aligned. Both Sweety G and I had transformed adversity into creativity, utilizing art and music as tools to uplift ourselves and others. Just as he evolved from a hip-hop pioneer to a renowned entrepreneur and mentor, my own journey took me from artist and event promoter into digital programing pushing innovation, to experiential marketing, vendor consulting and community leadership.
And just like that, I found my own voice.
After years of building community through technology, videos, music, art, and connection, I realized the world needed a place where food, culture, and creativity could come together in one space. That's when I was called to build BISTRO BUDDY — not just an app, but a movement. I built BISTRO BUDDY to give others a platform to share their passion, to celebrate flavors, music, and traditions from around the world, so we can share and celebrate each other’s cultures. It was through my struggles, my wins, and my resilience that I heard the calling loud enough: Create something bigger than yourself. BISTRO BUDDY became my way of turning all that pain into purpose, creativity into connection, and a single voice into a worldwide chorus of music, art, culture, food, drink, family and joy.Today, these parallel lives have converged into an inspiring partnership—brought together through shared history, mutual respect, and the influential voice of a hip-hop legend. Together, driven by our passion and shared purpose, we're committed to empowering communities, fostering creativity, and cultivating opportunities for future generations to find their voice.
Our intertwined stories serve as living proof that when art, innovation, and resilience unite, extraordinary things are bound to happen. From booking a legend who honored another legend, we've come full circle, ready to build a future where creativity and community flourish together.

Sweety G (Dr. Glenn Toby) – Comprehensive Background
Early Life and Upbringing
Dr. Glenn Toby, known in his early music days as “Sweety G,” was born in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Queensoldschoolhiphop.com. His childhood was marked by hardship – at just 8 years old, he and his family became homeless after his mother suffered a severe mental health breakdownoldschoolhiphop.com. For several years he lived in shelters, welfare hotels (notably Brooklyn’s St. George Hotel), foster homes, and with relatives before the family finally resettled in Queens when he reached junior high schoololdschoolhiphop.com. Despite these challenges, Toby’s mother and grandmother instilled in him a love of learning. He and his brother Randall often spent time at libraries and museums, which helped young Glenn maintain his imagination and passion even through adversity talentempowerment.com. This emphasis on education and reading would later prove pivotal in his life. Toby attended Junior High School 109 in Queens Village and went on to Benjamin N. Cardozo High School in Bayside, Queensoldschoolhiphop.com. By his teens, having “come up in the school of hard knocks,” Toby found an outlet and salvation in music, which he credits with “saving [his] life” as he emerged from homelessnessoldschoolhiphop.com.
Notably, Toby’s early struggle shaped his character and mission. He developed a perspective of resilience and determination “not commonly granted to such a young person” voyageatl.com. These formative experiences – overcoming poverty and homelessness – became the foundation for his later philanthropic drive to help others facing similar hardships.
Music Career as “Sweety G”
Glenn “Sweety G” Toby’s music career began in the late 1970s, during the formative years of hip-hop in New York City. Growing up in Queens at a time when hip-hop was dominated by the Bronx and Harlem, Sweety G became one of the first rap MCs to emerge from the Queens borough drglenntoby.com. In 1977, at just around 14 years old, he was given his first chance to rap on the microphone by the legendary DJ Grandmaster Flowersoldschoolhiphop.com – a significant moment that launched his path in the hip-hop scene. Sweety G quickly gained a reputation in Queens for his showmanship and innovative style. He often combined fast-paced rhymes with R&B-influenced melodic hooks, even singing during his performances – for example, introducing himself with the catchy line “I’m Sweety G, at the place to be”oldschoolhiphop.com. This blending of singing and rapping over R&B grooves was ahead of its time and had a lasting influence on the genre. As hip-hop icon Grandmaster Caz later noted, Sweety G was “one of the first dudes that rapped on top of R&B beats…anybody that ever made a record doing that rhyming melodically thing owes a lot to Sweety G” drglenntoby.com. Similarly, Doug E. Fresh cited Sweety G among the earliest Queens MCs “before Run [DMC] and them” who paved the way for later legends drglenntoby.com.
By the early 1980s, Sweety G had transitioned from live MCing to recording. He released several early hip-hop singles that became underground classics. His debut record “At The Place To Be” came out in 1981 on his friend Charles Fischer’s Starfish Records labeloldschoolhiphop.com. This track was a danceable hip-hop groove that pre-dated the commercial explosion of rap on Sugar Hill Recordsoldschoolhiphop.com. In 1982, Sweety G followed up with “We Want To Get Down” on Mike & Dave Recordsoldschoolhiphop.com, a Bronx-based hip-hop label.
Record label of Sweety G’s 1982 single “We Want To Get Down” on Mike & Dave Records (12″ vinyl). The track, featuring female vocalist Nadia Canty, became an underground hitoldschoolhiphop.com. Both songs showcased his signature party-rocking style and helped cement his status as a hip-hop pioneer. Though not commercial blockbusters at the time, these records later achieved cult status abroad – years later they unexpectedly gained popularity in Europe, receiving club and radio play in countries like Romania and Hungary oldschoolhiphop.com. Sweety G remarked on the enduring interest in his early music, amazed that the songs “blew up years later” as rare gems in the global dance sceneoldschoolhiphop.com.
During this era, Sweety G was deeply embedded in the New York hip-hop community. He worked and performed alongside many of the culture’s groundbreaking figures. For example, he shared the stage or studio with artists and crews such as Doug E. Fresh, Kool Moe Dee and the Treacherous Three, the Crash Crew, the Disco Twins, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Kurtis Blow, and Run-DMC traxsource.com. He was also close with the team that managed a young LL Cool J in the mid-1980s. In fact, LL Cool J’s managers (Charles Fisher and others) brought Toby onto LL’s early management team, recognizing Sweety G’s experience and connections in the hip-hop world talentempowerment.com. Sweety G contributed to guiding LL Cool J’s nascent career and scouting talent – he notes that future stars like Positive K and David Banner were among those he helped early on talentempowerment.com. (Toby eventually stepped away from LL Cool J’s management out of loyalty to Charles Fisher, who had originally brought him inoldschoolhiphop.com.) Sweety G’s role as a mentor and influencer in hip-hop culture extended to many others: for instance, rapper Positive K was a protégé who “used to listen to all [Sweety G’s] tapes” as a youth and whom Sweety G helped launch into the industryoldschoolhiphop.comoldschoolhiphop.com.
After roughly a decade as an MC and recording artist, by the mid-1980s Glenn Toby took a brief hiatus from the music business. The death of his beloved grandmother deeply affected him, and he stepped back to regroup traxsource.com. During this period he even held a corporate job and taught himself new skills like keyboard playing and music production traxsource.com. However, his passion for music pulled him back. In the late 1980s, Toby reinvented himself in the emerging house music scene. He built a recording studio in Queens Village (Studio 05A) with his brother Randall, which attracted well-known R&B and soul artists such as Melba Moore, Luther Vandross’s band, and others to collaborate traxsource.com. Around 1986, Glenn Toby (still sometimes using the moniker Sweety G) teamed up with Trinidadian producer Winston Jones and others to form the group Cultural Vibe traxsource.com oldschoolhiphop.com. Cultural Vibe became a significant name in New York’s garage/house music movement. Their first single “Mind Games” (1986) was a crossover dance hit, gaining national airplay at a time when house music was just entering the mainstream traxsource.com. This was followed in the same year by the tracks “Ma Foom Bey” and “Power,” which also received wide club play traxsource.com. These songs carried powerful Afrocentric and soulful messages, distinguishing Cultural Vibe in the garage house scene traxsource.com. The group toured extensively in the U.S. and Europe, even opening for superstar acts like Grace Jones, Chaka Khan, James “D-Train” Williams, Heavy D & The Boyz, Bobby Brown, and others traxsource.com. They performed at legendary clubs including NYC’s Paradise Garage and Newark’s Club Zanzibar, during the heyday of garage house music. Glenn Toby was not only a vocalist in Cultural Vibe but became a sought-after producer and remixer as well. He lent his voice to projects by famed house DJ/producer Victor Simonelli (such as the group Groove Committee) and worked on his own project called Nu Civilization traxsource.comtraxsource.com, touring internationally in the late ’80s.
In 1989, Glenn Toby earned a solo recording contract with Capitol Records, signed by A&R executive Kenny Ortiz traxsource.com. That year, his song “Someone to Love Me” was featured on Black Havana, a Capitol compilation album showcasing top house music artists traxsource.com. Through the early 1990s, Toby continued to contribute to the dance music world as a writer and producer. Notably, he co-wrote the song “You’re the Love of My Life” for R&B/club singer Sybil, and he crafted remixes for artists like Mary Wilson (of The Supremes) and R. Kelly traxsource.com. His style brought a distinctive African-influenced vocal flavor into house music, something peers recognized as a unique contribution: “His music brought a whole new conversation to House music – the African flavor to the vocals,” praised Richie Weeks of the group Kraze traxsource.com.
By the mid-1990s, Glenn “Sweety G” Toby had achieved dual legendary status in music – as an early pioneer of hip-hop and an influential figure in the development of New York garage/house music traxsource.com. This ever-expanding musical journey eventually led him to transition once again, this time behind the scenes into talent management and business. As he later reflected, “when the new young guns come into the game… I said, ‘Let me study the game’,” noting that he educated himself in the business aspects of entertainment to protect artists (including himself) from exploitation talentempowerment.com. Armed with industry savvy and a lifelong habit of voracious reading, Toby moved into the next phase of his career.

Philanthropic Work and Community Impact
Glenn Toby’s difficult childhood journey from homelessness to success instilled in him a deep commitment to philanthropy and community service. He has been especially passionate about causes related to literacy, poverty alleviation, and homelessness – issues he personally overcame. Dr. Toby’s signature philanthropic venture is the Book Bank Foundation (BBF), which he founded in 1997/1998 in New York voyageatl.comtraxsource.com. The Book Bank Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to combating illiteracy and providing support to underprivileged and homeless individuals. Toby often says the foundation was his way of “giving back to the place where [he] started” and sharing the “confidence and insight that reading gave [him]” with others in tough situations petertosh.com.
Over more than two decades, the Book Bank Foundation has made a significant community impact. It has served over 175,000 children nationwide and contributed more than 520,000 volunteer hours through its programs petertosh.com. BBF volunteers (including Toby himself) conduct literacy programs, book donations, mentoring, tutoring, and other services aimed at fostering education and self-esteem among youth. The foundation runs initiatives like “Shelter from the Streets,” where volunteers distribute books, food, and essentials to homeless populations in cities (an event that even inspired Toby’s documentary film) tnj.com. Another initiative is the “Hero Awards,” recognizing individuals who overcome adversity – reflecting Toby’s ethos of highlighting positive role models petertosh.com.
Toby’s work with BBF has drawn praise from many prominent figures. Former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, “He is spreading his message across our great nation about the power of literacy,” using his own life story and book projects as inspiration drglenntoby.com. Hip-hop legend LL Cool J has also publicly supported BBF, stating, “Everywhere I go I’m now bringing up The Book Bank Foundation… More people should be doing foundations like this.” drglenntoby.com. Under Toby’s leadership, BBF doesn’t just donate books; it focuses on building personal development – boosting self-worth and providing a “blueprint” for success for youths facing homelessness or poverty, much as Toby once did drglenntoby.com.
Cover of Dr. Glenn Toby’s children’s book “Lil’ G Faces the Brooklyn Bully.” This illustrated story, inspired by Toby’s own childhood, addresses homelessness and bullying in a way young readers can understand drglenntoby.com. Proceeds and efforts from the book support Toby’s literacy and anti-bullying advocacy.
In addition to direct charitable services, Dr. Glenn Toby has leveraged his experiences into authorship and advocacy to spread awareness. In 2012, he wrote a children’s book titled “Lil’ G Faces the Brooklyn Bully,” a story about a young homeless boy (Lil’ G) and his single mother overcoming challenges in a new shelter and school drglenntoby.com. The book tackles real-life concerns of homelessness and bullying in a child-friendly narrative, reflecting Toby’s own life events. “With the eradication of illiteracy embedded in Toby’s heart, authoring a children’s book was the obvious next step,” one synopsis noted, and Lil’ G was published as a tool to inspire and educate youth facing adversity amazon.com.be. Toby has since donated copies of the book and used it in workshops to encourage reading among at-risk kids. He also authored “Lil’ G and the Dirty Faced Angels” (part of a Hood Heroes series), further exploring themes of faith and perseverance in urban youth settings drglenntoby.com. Beyond children’s literature, Dr. Toby contributed a chapter (“Prosperity Will Come”) to the inspirational anthology “Souls of My Brothers” (2003), where Black men share personal stories of struggle and triumph drglenntoby.com. He even penned a novel, “The Asian Power League,” a political thriller about a young mogul’s rise (demonstrating the range of his writing interests) drglenntoby.com. All these works tie back to Toby’s core mission of empowerment: they not only broaden his philanthropic reach through storytelling but also reinforce his message that education and knowledge can uplift individuals from any circumstance.
Glenn Toby’s philanthropic influence extends into advisory roles as well. In 2019, he was invited to join the board of directors of the Peter Tosh Foundation, a non-profit founded by the family of reggae icon Peter Tosh to promote social justice, education, and humanitarian causes. Toby serves as the Chairperson of the Board for the foundation petertosh.com, bringing his decades of non-profit management experience to help further its mission. The foundation noted that Toby’s “years of service to communities around the globe” and business acumen “lend themselves to [our] increased social impact” petertosh.com. This role aligns with Toby’s advocacy beyond literacy – including prison reform, equal rights, and global poverty alleviation. In fact, Toby’s documentary film S.T.O.P.: Solutions to Overcoming Poverty was an international project, filmed in regions from Brazil to Hong Kong, aimed at raising awareness of poverty worldwidegoldposter.com.
Dr. Toby frequently emphasizes that entrepreneurs and public figures have a duty to give back. He feels it’s “a mandate on a human level” to not only achieve success but also “cause change” by uplifting others tnj.com. To that end, he often participates as a motivational speaker and mentor. He has given talks at schools, shelters, and conferences, sharing his personal journey from homeless shelters to boardrooms. Through the Book Bank Foundation and other avenues, he has personally mentored countless young people, instilling in them the same lessons of hope and hard work that guided him. In summary, Glenn Toby’s philanthropic work – whether through hands-on charity, educational outreach, or strategic advocacy – has made a tangible impact in communities, truly embodying his belief in “the power of literacy” and compassion to break the cycle of poverty.
Education and the “Dr.” Title
Despite not following a traditional academic path in his youth (his formal education concluded with high school as he launched into music), Glenn Toby has always been a self-educated individual and proponent of lifelong learning. His honorific title “Dr. Glenn Toby” stems from an honorary doctorate degree awarded to him in recognition of his humanitarian and educational contributions. In 2005, Kathmandu International University in Nepal presented Toby with an honorary doctorate, an event Toby describes as one of his most humbling accolades petertosh.com. During the doctoral ceremony, Bishop Luke Vandari likened Toby’s compassionate heart to that of “Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa,” underscoring the impact of Toby’s charitable work petertosh.com. This honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree solidified his use of the title “Dr.” before his name. It was a recognition of the knowledge and expertise he had demonstrated outside of formal academia – particularly his efforts to increase literacy and advocate for the homeless.
In addition to the honorary doctorate, Dr. Toby has received numerous awards and honors for community leadership and service. These include a Congressional Proclamation of Honor from U.S. Congressman Gregory Meeks of New York, the National Urban League’s Leadership and Achievement Award, and the Harvard University “Man of the Year – Vanguard Award” in 2005 drglenntoby.competertosh.com. (Harvard’s award was given after Toby spoke on the importance of literacy and empowerment, and it was the same year as his honorary Ph.D.) He’s also been recognized by institutions like Princeton University with an Excellence Award drglenntoby.com. Such honors from academia and civic institutions highlight that Toby’s educational influence extends beyond any classroom – it lies in his ability to educate and inspire through action.
Dr. Toby is also an educator in a broader sense: he has served as a guest lecturer at various colleges and universities, including Harvard, Princeton, Duke, and North Carolina Central University, speaking on topics ranging from financial literacy and entrepreneurship to overcoming adversity petertosh.com. His lectures often draw on his personal narrative to underline the value of education (formal and self-taught). Indeed, Toby frequently attributes his success to the fact that he “took to the books” and educated himself in whatever he needed to learn – be it the music business, real estate, or contract law talentempowerment.comtalentempowerment.com. In interviews, he stresses that knowledge was the key to transforming his life. For example, as a teenager he and his brother would read voraciously, which empowered him to navigate the music industry and later the corporate world talentempowerment.com. This commitment to learning is a big part of why the title “Dr.” resonates with him – it symbolizes the transformative power of education, both informal and formal, that he wants to pass on to others.
In summary, the “Dr.” title used by Glenn Toby is honorary petertosh.com, reflecting recognitions bestowed for his philanthropic and educational impact. He does not hold a conventional academic doctorate, but through lifelong learning and teaching, he has earned the respect of academic and community institutions alike. To this day, Dr. Toby proudly uses the title as a reminder of his mission to champion education and uplift those in need through knowledge.
Recent Endeavors and Current Projects
As of the mid-2020s, Dr. Glenn Toby remains an active and dynamic figure in multiple arenas. He continues to helm Glenn Toby Enterprises, overseeing its various divisions and investments. Under his leadership, GTE is still guiding artists, athletes, and entrepreneurs to success. For instance, Toby’s team is regularly involved in negotiating new entertainment deals and sports contracts, and he is often called upon as a strategic advisor by celebrities and business leaders seeking to grow their brands talentempowerment.com. With decades of experience behind him, Toby has become something of an elder statesman in hip-hop and sports management – a role he embraces by mentoring up-and-coming talent managers and artists. (On social media he is fondly referred to as a “Hip-Hop OG” and “Kingmaker” for his role in shaping career sx.com.)
One of Dr. Toby’s notable recent projects was the completion and release of his documentary film S.T.O.P.: Solutions to Overcoming Poverty. The project, which he began filming in 2012, was completed around 2014–2016 tnj.comgoldposter.com. The documentary takes a global look at poverty and features stories from multiple countries, aiming to not only illustrate the scope of poverty but also propose actionable solutions tnj.com. Toby produced and directed S.T.O.P. through his film company, marking his directorial debut. The film’s creation was a hands-on endeavor: it drew from footage of Toby’s own charitable missions (like BBF’s work in shelters) and included collaborations with other activists and producerstnj.com. By 2016, S.T.O.P. was being screened and shared as an educational piece, extending Toby’s advocacy to an international audience goldposter.com. In tandem, Toby has hinted at developing further film or television content that addresses social issues, blending entertainment with positive messaging – a space where he can leverage both his creative background and philanthropic passion.
On the literary front, Dr. Toby’s role as an author has also continued. He has been working on expanding the “Lil’ G” series to further address youth issues in a relatable format. Additionally, his foray into fiction with The Asian Power League suggests he may explore more novel-writing or even scripted content production in the future. Publicly, Toby often emphasizes storytelling as a powerful tool for change, so it would not be surprising to see more books or film projects emerge from his efforts.
In terms of public appearances, Glenn Toby is frequently seen on the speaking circuit and in media interviews. In recent years he has appeared on podcasts (such as the Talent Empowerment podcast in 2023) to share insights on leadership and overcoming adversity talentempowerment.comtalentempowerment.com. He has been featured in magazines like VoyageATL (2018) as an inspiring Atlanta-based entrepreneurvoyageatl.com, and he’s been invited to speak at events ranging from business conferences to youth mentorship workshops. In Atlanta, he’s involved in local development projects and frequently mentions the city’s vibrant culture and opportunities (his family has roots in Atlanta, making it a full-circle connection) voyageatl.com.
Dr. Toby’s social media presence also reflects his current endeavors. He actively uses platforms like Instagram and X (Twitter) to highlight ongoing projects, share motivational content, and spotlight the work of the Book Bank Foundation. His posts often show him meeting with clients, attending charity drives, or visiting schools – underlining that his day-to-day life blends business and community work. Even in his mid-50s, Glenn Toby’s energy is undiminished; as he quipped in one interview, he still carries the creative heart of an artist and the boots-on-the-ground hustle of a businessman talentempowerment.com.
Most recently, Dr. Toby has taken on the role of Board Chairman of the Peter Tosh Foundation (PTF), as mentioned earlier. Since 2019, he has been working with the Tosh family and other board members on initiatives that include advocacy for prison reform, cannabis policy (in line with Peter Tosh’s legacy), and cultural education programs petertosh.competertosh.com. This role has Toby traveling and collaborating with international partners, merging his business skills with activism. It’s a continuation of the global outlook he adopted with the S.T.O.P. documentary – addressing systemic issues on a worldwide stage.
In summary, Dr. Glenn “Sweety G” Toby in 2025 is a man wearing many hats: CEO, talent manager, film producer, author, philanthropist, and mentor. He operates an investment and consulting firm that continues to evolve with the times, including exploring new technology ventures tnj.com. He spearheads a non-profit that remains active in literacy programs and homeless outreach. He lends his voice to causes both through art (books/films) and direct action (board service, public speaking). And not least, he occasionally returns to his musical roots – whether it’s deejaying at an event or releasing a classic house remix (indeed, Toby has recently collaborated on new house music tracks, such as a 2024 release with Victor Simonelli traxsource.com, showing that his creative spark is still alive).
Glenn Toby’s journey from a homeless child nicknamed “Lil G” to a successful entrepreneur and community leader is ongoing. Each chapter of his life builds on the last: the hip-hop pioneer informs the talent manager, the onetime homeless student drives the philanthropist, and the business mogul still thinks like a creative artist. This comprehensive portrait of Sweety G illustrates not only what he has accomplished – from early hip-hop records and house music hits to corporate deals and charitable foundations – but also why he remains influential. Dr. Glenn Toby’s story is ultimately one of resilience, innovation, and service, a true example of using one’s talents and success to uplift others “with passion and a dream” drglenntoby.com.

- Remembering Jay Piccirillo Bridgeport's Beloved 'Ice Man' Micalizzi’s Italian Ice
- 19th Apr, 2025
- Restaurant News
As someone who was born and raised on Manhattan Ave in Bridgeport during the vibrant 90s, some memories remain vivid and cherished. Every summer, my friends and I eagerly walked down Madison Ave to Micalizzi Italian Ice, creating colorful mixtures of our favorite flavors. Those days weren't just about Italian Ice—they were about friendships, laughter, and growing up in a community that shaped who I am today.
I still remember one year as a kid, getting off the school bus at the wrong stop—just so I could be one of the first to grab a cup of Italian Ice as soon as Micalizzi’s opened for the season. That excitement, that taste of summer, was something magical that only Piccirillo family, Jay Piccirillo and Micalizzi’s could deliver.
Today, we deeply reflect on the incredible life and legacy of Jay Piccirillo, Bridgeport’s iconic "Ice Man." Jay passed away suddenly at the age of 54, leaving behind an unforgettable mark on our city. His larger-than-life personality, combining the charisma of Willy Wonka, Walt Disney, and Santa Claus, was matched only by his boundless compassion and generosity.
Jay grew up at Micalizzi’s, originally founded by Sal Micalizzi in the 1930s and later run by his father, Andy. Under Jay's enthusiastic stewardship, Micalizzi's not only became a local landmark but also expanded significantly through wholesale operations and the popular mobile "Brain Freeze Bar."
Affectionately known as "Pic," Jay’s legacy extends far beyond his business. He was an unwavering philanthropist who tirelessly supported community events, charities, and countless families in need. From organizing wrestling matches, fireworks, and Columbus Day festivals to providing meals during holidays, Jay’s actions continuously fostered unity and joy.
BISTRO BUDDY proudly honors Jay Piccirillo’s extraordinary life, highlighting the values of kindness, optimism, and community service that he embodied. Bridgeport isn’t just the city of our birth—it’s a testament to Jay’s lasting impact, where every scoop of Micalizzi Italian Ice remains a sweet reminder of the connections we cherish and the community we love.
Jay Piccirillo’s vibrant spirit will forever live on in the heart of Bridgeport. His family created more than a business—they created a story for generations to tell. The building that stood proudly at 712 Madison Avenue wasn’t just a shop—it was a landmark where people gathered, where the parking lot buzzed with conversation, and where friendships formed on the sidewalks. That corner of Bridgeport holds memories frozen in time, sweetened with every scoop of Italian Ice and warmed by the legacy of the man who made it all possible.
Bridgeport isn't just the birth city of our food story and history—it’s also where I began my culinary journey, attending culinary school at Bullard-Havens Technical High School. This foundation deepened my connection to the Bridgeport food community, eventually inspiring the creation of BISTRO BUDDY, a venture rooted in the same spirit of community and culinary passion. Seeing how Micalizzi’s Italian Ice, under Jay Piccirillo’s leadership, became a symbol of unity and creativity, we were inspired to showcase not just food, but the stories behind every dish and its connection to the community
Here’s an additional piece of history to further connect the story, but if anyone has more to add, we’d be happy to update it. If the family wishes to reach out, we would love to dive deeper into Jay’s legacy, offering detailed video coverage to honor this incredible man.Jay Piccirillo’s journey with Micalizzi’s Italian Ice is a testament to his dedication to both family and community. Taking over the business from his father, Andy Piccirillo, who had purchased it in 1979, Jay continued to build on the legacy that had started in 1937. Under Jay’s leadership, Micalizzi’s became a beloved Bridgeport institution, offering delicious Italian ice while expanding the product line and adding creative new flavors.
One of Jay’s most notable contributions was his savvy use of social media. Recognizing the power of Facebook and Instagram, Jay expertly used visuals to showcase Micalizzi’s treats, learning the best times to post and leveraging major events like the Super Bowl to boost visibility. His understanding of social media marketing helped Micalizzi’s reach a wider audience and solidified its place in the hearts of many.
Jay’s efforts didn’t stop at social media. He continuously innovated by introducing new flavors, including the famous cannoli ice cream, and the unique "Brain Freeze Bar" that brought Micalizzi’s to events and festivals, making it more accessible to the community. His commitment to maintaining the family business while staying on top of modern trends contributed significantly to the continued success and relevance of Micalizzi’s Italian Ice in Bridgeport and beyond.
Micalizzi’s Italian Ice: A Bridgeport Institution’s History
Origins with Sal Micalizzi (1940s–1970s)
Micalizzi’s Italian Ice began in the late 1940s or early 1950s when Salvatore “Sal” Micalizzi opened a small Italian ice stand at Success Park in Bridgeport. His gourmet Italian ices and ice creams quickly earned a loyal following. In the early 1960s, Sal relocated to Madison Avenue, expanding the menu and building a stronger presence. By the 1970s, he had moved again to the Black Rock area and eventually to East Main Street, establishing what would become the flagship store. His products became a summertime tradition in Bridgeport, celebrated for their flavor and authenticity.
Andy Piccirillo’s Vision and Transition (1970s–1984)
In the 1970s, Bridgeport native Andy Piccirillo fell in love with Micalizzi’s and dreamed of selling the Italian ice himself. With Sal’s blessing, Andy opened a small stand on the front porch of his home on Madison Avenue in 1977. It was a hit, especially with students from nearby Central High School. In 1983, Sal passed the torch and sold the business to Andy. Sadly, Andy passed away just one year later in 1984 at the age of 38, leaving behind his wife Lucille and two young children. His dream, however, would live on.
Lucille Piccirillo’s Leadership (1984–2000s)
After Andy’s passing, his wife Lucille took full control of the business. With no business experience and two children to raise, she successfully managed and grew Micalizzi’s. She kept Sal’s original recipes intact, expanded the flavor lineup, and built a growing customer base. Under Lucille’s care, the Madison Avenue stand became a cherished local fixture, drawing generations of families each season and paving the way for the next era of family ownership.
Jay “The Iceman” Piccirillo and Modern Expansion (2000s–2020s)
Jason “Jay” Piccirillo grew up working the stand from the age of seven. After college, he took on a larger role and eventually became the face of Micalizzi’s. Jay expanded the menu to over two dozen Italian ice flavors and introduced homemade ice cream, milkshakes, and sundaes. He also introduced protein-infused shakes and organic supplements inspired by his bodybuilding background. Jay launched the Brain Freeze Bar, a mobile cart and truck that brought Micalizzi’s to events and festivals around the region. In 2021, he opened a second retail location in downtown Milford, fulfilling a long-time goal of expanding beyond Bridgeport. His charismatic “Ice Man” persona, complete with costumes and social media catchphrases like “Have an ice day,” made Micalizzi’s not just a dessert shop but an experience.
Community Involvement and Local Impact
Micalizzi’s has long been a cornerstone of the Bridgeport community. From church events and school fundraisers to charity donations and family festivals, the Piccirillos have always given back. Jay organized everything from wrestling shows to Columbus Day parades and fireworks outside the shop. He was known for playing Santa at Christmastime and donating thousands of meals during the holidays. His generosity, warm personality, and creative energy made him a beloved figure. The shop itself became a meeting place where people felt like family, and Jay became a symbol of community pride and unity.
Jay Piccirillo’s Passing and Enduring Legacy (2025)
In April 2025, Bridgeport lost one of its most cherished figures when Jay Piccirillo passed away suddenly at age 54. The community was heartbroken. Jay had become synonymous with Micalizzi’s and with Bridgeport itself. People gathered outside the Madison Avenue stand, leaving flowers and messages in tribute. He had kept alive a tradition started in the 1940s and elevated it to new heights. Today, his legacy lives on through the family business, which continues to serve delicious Italian ice and ice cream, bringing people together with the same warmth and joy that Jay embodied. Micalizzi’s remains a symbol of unity, tradition, and local pride—thanks to Jay, Lucille, Andy, and Sal before them.

Patsy's Pizzeria Brings New York's Iconic Coal-Fired Pizza to Greenwich
Patsy's Pizzeria, a legendary establishment rooted in East Harlem, New York, has officially opened its doors in Greenwich, Connecticut. Located at 130 E. Putnam Ave, this new pizzeria represents a significant milestone as it marks Patsy's first venture outside of New York State. The opening, eagerly anticipated by the community, was delayed due to inspection processes, as noted by co-owner Steve Haxhiaj.
Founded by Pasquale "Patsy" Lancieri in 1933, Patsy's Pizzeria is famous for its coal-fired, thin-crust pizza—a style that has come to define New York pizza culture. Over the years, it has become a beloved spot for many celebrities, including Frank Sinatra and Joe DiMaggio. The Greenwich location not only offers Patsy’s signature pizza but also features a more extensive menu, including steaks, lamb chops, veal chops, and homemade pasta, combining elements from the owners' other Manhattan restaurants, Il Monello and Tuscany Steakhouse.
This new Greenwich location is described as a more upscale version of the original Patsy’s, maintaining the authenticity of the original East Harlem pizzeria while introducing a modern twist. The pizzeria's interior, featuring about 65 seats and a full bar, initially opened for dinner only, with plans to extend to lunch service soon.
By bringing a piece of New York’s storied pizza history to Connecticut, Patsy's aims to offer both locals and visitors an authentic taste of the famed Patsy's experience. Whether you're indulging in their iconic thin-crust pizza or savoring one of their Italian specialties, Patsy's Pizzeria promises to be a culinary highlight in Greenwich.
