Established in 1866 by 46 German immigrants, the Meriden Turner Society represents Meriden's commitment to preserving German culture and ideals of holistic wellness. Originally meeting in private homes, the society procured its Turner Hall in 1879. Over the decades, the society's mission expanded from gymnastics to embrace German and American Folk Singing, choral competitions, and community outreach. Today's Turner Hall, rebuilt in 1962, is a symbol of their 150-year journey. With leaders like Mrs. Martha Wagner and Mr. Roy Madeia at the helm, they've achieved significant recognition in choral arts. Further cultural enrichment came with the addition of the H.S.V. Bavaria Schuhplattlers in 2010. Progressive strides were made in 1988, allowing women voting rights within the society. Hosting events like the Meriden Daffodil Festival and Biergarten picnics, the society stands as a beacon of German heritage, eager to inspire future generations as it celebrates its rich past.
